Food Storage
Basic Food Storage Training
Begin by determining what you family eats in a day and multiply X7 for a 1 week supply
Isaiah said that learning comes “precept upon precept; line upon line, here a little, and there a little” (Isaiah 28:10). This is how we build our food storage.
There are three main components of food storage:
· Short term supply - Shown below (left)
· Long term supply - Shown below (right)
· Water Supply - Water Supply has its own seperate page on this site. It's that important
It is important to remember that you should not go to extremes when establishing your food storage. For example, it is not wise to go into debt to establish your food storage all at once. Develop it gradually so that it will not become a financial burden.
Much like developing a savings account, we need to be frugal and not wasteful. If we save a little when we can, (and not spend it) our savings account will grow. Food storage works the same way. Store what you can and rotate your food so it always stays as fresh as can be.
Short term Supply
Long Term Supply
Having spent a significant amount of time shopping for the best deals on food for storage purposes, we have determined that there is no one clear winner. Below is a list of a few places that can provide some of the best deals for storage food as well as day to day.
Sam's Club - Sam's Club always seems to be near the best prices on food. We spend a lot of time shopping there for the group home that we provide meals/food for.
Walmart - Many things that are not available at Sam's Club are often found at Walmart at some of the most reasonable prices.
US Foods Chef Store and Restaurant Depot - These are a couple of stores locally that have certain larger quantities available, usually at a pretty reasonable price. Their bulk meat area is very good.
Costco Business and Costco Warehouse - both very good places to check out but beware, just because it came from Costco does not always mean it is the best price. Quality and return policies are 2nd to none
Home Storage Center (located @ Bishop's Storehouse) - basic commodities packaged for storage at excellent prices. Absolutely the best prices you will find on the commodities they have available.
Home food storage is accomplished in several ways. Purchasing food that is already preserved via pre-canned foods, storing basic commodities like rice, beans, wheat, etc. often using oxygen packets and mylar bags or canning jars for freeze dried food OR home canning. I strongly suggest that anyone who is not familiar with accepted safe practices for canning their own food, check out the Food Safety section of this site. There are links to those who set the safe standards for home preservation found on that page.
Freeze drying is a great way to preserve food for a long period of time using a home freeze Dryer. I have a friend, Tristan, out at Harvest Right Freeze Dryers in SLC. He has been very helpful getting me set up with our freeze dryer(s). Check them out - freeze dried food can last up to 25 years!
It has proven to be a great resource for us because we often freeze dry food that are leftovers or purchased in a quantity discount. Again, use wisdom and avoid debt, but this may be another viable solution for you.
